Located just west of downtown Austin, Building B at 4417 Westlake Dr. expands the workspace for an existing nonprofit organization by adding 27,000 square feet of office space and three floors of underground parking. Originally designed by STG, the existing building sits along a hillside, capitalizing on dramatic views and the natural landscape. Building B’s placement on site introduces an intimate new arrival plaza and communal outdoor space, punctuated by the several heritage oak trees.

The existing architecture is defined by a curving wood wall and expansive canopy that gracefully marks the main entrance, creating an engaging focal point. This new building is thoughtfully aligned with the main circulation elements of the existing structure, reinforcing a natural flow and campus-wide synergy. A key feature of the expansion is a communicating bridge that spans the arrival plaza, designed to sustain the non-profit’s ethos of collaboration. The use of structural steel, frameless glass, and wood cladding for the bridge not only complements the existing main lobby but also enhances the transition between the buildings, fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Sustainability is a core principle guiding the entire campus design. With Building B, the campus now boasts a 6,700 square foot solar array, a 12,000 gal rainwater collection cistern that not only collects the rainwater but also ground water which results in use of zero potable water for irrigation, and smart building systems that adapt to usage patterns to minimize energy consumption. Interior spaces like breakrooms serve as communal hubs, wellness and shower facilities encourage a healthy workplace, and tall ceilings allow natural light to permeate the workspace.

STG’s architectural vision for Building B equips its owner with enhanced capacity to grow its staff and broaden its global impact, ensuring that the nonprofit can continue to advance its mission effectively.
